Q&A with Farmer Carey

In this video, students hear from Farmer Carey, the owner and operator of Diamond Island Farms in Hawaii. Carey shares his journey into farming, beginning with a background in environmental studies and sociology, and how he transitioned into agriculture through the GoFarm program. Students will learn about the challenges of starting a farm from scratch, including land access and equipment needs, and how support programs can help new farmers succeed. Carey also describes a typical harvest day, her favorite aspects of farming, the diverse crops he grows, and her approach to managing soil health, pests, and water. This video offers a real-world perspective on starting and running a small farm, especially in a tropical island context.
